Each type is subject to different modifications. The third type is "beatmapped," which is similar to the one-shot tracks except that beatmapped tracks adapt to tempo changes. These are accents or interruptions, not continuous patterns, and they are not affected by the tempo settings of the project. The second type, the "one-shot," is a clip that is not looped, such as cymbal crashes, sound bites, and vocals. Looped tracks are designed to create a repeating beat or pattern, such as a bass line or drumbeat. Most media can be treated in one of three ways. If the sample is long and has not already been analyzed, the Beatmap Wizard will appear and allow the user to walk through the process of analyzing it. Unlike other packages that require users to spend time and energy synchronizing the tempos of the diverse media clips to create a homogenous mix, Acid 5.0 works on the principle of "beatmapping." Each medium is analyzed to discover a tempo, number of beats, and a root pitch. Users can also download media directly from the Internet into the mix. Media can be copied from a hard drive or ripped from a CD. This new version also allows users to import Macromedia Flash events. Acid allows you to import standard sound, video, and image formats, plus proprietary file formats from Sony, Sonic Foundry, and Photoshop. Use the Explorer view in the lower half to find the media you wish to use and simply drag the file icons into the upper half each clip becomes its own track. When you open the program the screen is divided into an upper half and a lower half (see Figure 3). As someone who was not really familiar with this type of composition, I had a little difficulty getting the hang of it, but it did not take long before I was able to work quickly and freely with the software.Ĭreating a project in Acid 5.0 is as simple as moving files on your computer. In a way, this is a return to earlier forms of electronic music where the electronic medium was a way of organizing and manipulating samples of sounds.
